Behind The Story

(contains spoilers)

This story began in the summer of 2023, when I visited a quiet temple in downtown Vancouver. It was a beautiful day, and I found myself drawn to a small pond at the center of the temple. As I stood there, I noticed a perfectly heart-shaped leaf resting on a rock by the water. It felt almost intentional, as if it had been gently placed there for someone to find. I took a picture of it and thought—what if someone wrote a message on a leaf like this and sent it to someone they loved? Wouldn’t that make it even more special?

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet poetry of nature, especially the sun and the moon. That day, under the bright sky, an idea began to form. The leaf lay still on the rock, touched by sunlight, and I wondered—what if the sun could write a message on that leaf and send it to the moon? After all, they are always there for each other, yet never able to meet.

That was how this story was born.

I began working on the manuscript almost immediately. The story came to me quickly, as if it had been waiting to be told. Within a few weeks, I had written, revised, and completed it.

Then came the bigger question: should I ask someone else to illustrate the book, or should I try to bring it to life myself?

In the end, I chose to challenge myself and illustrate the book on my own for the first time. I’ve always had an interest in art, but illustration was something I had never fully explored. The lack of experience—and confidence—slowed me down more than once.

And yet, here I am, three years later, having completed the illustrations and finally published the book.

This journey gave me more than just the experience of being a first-time illustrator. It gave me hope, and it opened the door to dreams I didn’t know I was allowed to have. Creating children’s books and illustrating them has become something deeply meaningful to me. I hope to continue telling stories that feel gentle, honest, and timeless—stories that children can grow up with, and that anyone, at any age, can find comfort in.

The leaf that inspired this story.
